Book Description:
The Turin Shroud is the most important and studied relic in the world. Many papers on it have recently appeared in important scientific journals. Scientific studies on the relic until today fail to provide conclusive answers about the identity of the enveloped man and the dynamics regarding the image formation impressed therein. This book not only addresses these issues in a scientific and objective manner but also leads the reader through new search paths. It summarizes the results in a simple manner for the reader to comprehend easily. Many books on the theme have been already published, but none of them contains such a quantity of scientific news and reports. The most important of them is the following: the result of the 1988 radiocarbon dating is statistically wrong and other three new dating methods demonstrate that the Shroud has an age compatible with the epoch in which Jesus Christ lived in Palestine. A numismatic analysis performed on Byzantine gold coins confirms this result. This book is, therefore, very important with respect to the Turin Shroud. It is unique in its genre and a very useful tool for those who want to study the subject deeply.

Format: pdf
Book Description:
How is life related to the mind? The question has long confounded philosophers and scientists, and it is this so-called explanatory gap between biological life and consciousness that Evan Thompson explores in Mind in Life. Thompson draws upon sources as diverse as molecular biology, evolutionary theory, artificial life, complex systems theory, neuroscience, psychology, Continental Phenomenology, and analytic philosophy to argue that mind and life are more continuous than has previously been accepted, and that current explanations do not adequately address the myriad facets of the biology and phenomenology of mind. Where there is life, Thompson argues, there is mind: life and mind share common principles of self-organization, and the self-organizing features of mind are an enriched version of the self-organizing features of life. Rather than trying to close the explanatory gap, Thompson marshals philosophical and scientific analyses to bring unprecedented insight to the nature of life and consciousness. This synthesis of phenomenology and biology helps make Mind in Life a vital and long-awaited addition to his landmark volume The Embodied Mind: Cognitive Science and Human Experience (coauthored with Eleanor Rosch and Francisco Varela). Endlessly interesting and accessible, Mind in Life is a groundbreaking addition to the fields of the theory of the mind, life science, and phenomenology.

Book Description:
Dayworld is Earth in the future. World leaders have instituted a new way of living to solve overpopulation. The days of the week exist as alternate realities. Each day has it s own police, firemen, government officials, doctors and people. Most people share thier homes with seven other people, couples or families though never see each other. The stoning device allows all this to be possible. A person or object may be placed in suspended animation for any ammount of time, then reactivated at the desired time. So, a person who lives on Monday would enter thier stoning chaimber before midnight, and then be reactivated the next Monday at midnight with no perception of the time that had passed. However, a secret society, the Immers is working against the government to allow people to live all the days, and to have freedom and democracy. They employ daybreakers in thier fold who commit one of the ultimate felonies to bring messages to agents who exist in the different days. Jeff is one of these. He has divided his personality into seven distinct personalities, one for each day as a controlled skitzophrania. But, events which threaten him and his society cause his personalities to come crashing together and may threaten to destroy him and the Immers. Overall, a good book. The charachterization was good, though not as in depth as it could have been. And, it seems from this book and others of Farmers books I ve read he doesn t write strong female charachters to take stronger roles.

Book Description:
Worlds of Wonder starts out like a lot of other books of this type, but after the first few chapters you ll find some really useful and specific advice. My favorite sections are those on writing in E-prime (shunning the passive verb to be ), writing in the discomfort zone, making critical distinctions and creating powerful paragraphs. Gerrod has two long chapters on fantasy and alien world building which I found useful even though I m not a fan of fantasy worlds. I like Gerrold s style. It s easy to follow and entertaining. Yes, it seems self indulgent when he uses his own examples in every chapter but he s also a big fan of classic science fiction and uses Robert Heinlein, Theodore Sturgeon and others for balance. This is a really superb book. Writers outside of science fiction could benefit from the advice, but I m glad to see it focusing on science fiction. Gerrold offers writers a great deal of insight and enthusiam. My favorite line comes near the end, If you haven t written a million words, it s all practice.

Book Description:
It s the 21st century, and all is right with the world. Or so it seems. Vice President Charlie Haskell, who will travel anywhere for a photo op, is about to cut the ribbon for the just-completed American Moonbase. The first Mars voyage is about to leave high orbit, with a woman at the helm. Below, the world is marveling at a rare solar eclipse. But all that is right is about to go disastrously wrong when an amateur astronomer discovers a new comet. Named for its discover, Tomikois a sun-grazer, an interstellar wanderer with a hundred times the mass and ten times the speed of other comets. And it is headed straight for our moon. In less than five days, if scientists predictions are right, Tomiko will crash into the moon, shattering it into a cloud of superheated gas, dust, and huge chunks of rock that will rain down on the earth, causing chaos and killer storms, possibly tidal waves inundating entire cities...or worse: a single apocalyptic worldwide extinction event. In the meantime, the population of Moonbase must be evacuated by a hastily assembled fleet of shuttle rockets. There isn t room, or time enough, for everyone. And the vice president, who rashly promised to be last off ( I will lock the door and turn off the lights ), is trying to figure out how to get away without eating his words. In Moonfall,McDevitt has created a disaster thriller of truly epic proportions, featuring a cast of unforgettable characters: the reluctant Russian rocket jockey entrusted with the lives of squabbling refugees the woman chosen to be first on the moon the scientist who must deflect the possum (POSSible IMpactors) knocked from orbit or witness the end science itself. And at the center of it all is Charlie Haskell, the career politician who discovers his own unexpected reserves of only himself and his country, but for all humankind. Moonfall,is a spellbinding tale of heroism and hope, cowardice and passion played against the awesome spectacle of human history s darkest night.

Book Description:
Malware poses one of the major threats to all currently operated computer systems. The scale of the problem becomes obvious by looking at the global economic loss caused by different kinds of malware, which is estimated to be more than US$ 10 billion every year. Botnets, a special kind of malware, are used to reap economic gains by criminals as well as for politically motivated activities. In contrast to other kinds of malware, botnets utilize a hidden communication channel to receive commands from their operator and communicate their current status. The ability to execute almost arbitrary commands on the infected machines makes botnets a general-purpose tool to perform malicious cyber-activities. Botnets provides a comprehensive analysis of the topic, and comprises both technical and non-technical sections written by leading cybersecurity experts. The non-technical section addresses how botnet infrastructure could be exploited for national security and cybercrime purposes. It approaches the subject as a public policy issue and analyzes the phenomenon of botnets from national security, law enforcement and regulatory policy perspectives, and makes recommendations for policy-makers on different public policies, highlighting the need for international response mechanisms. The technical section provides insight into current botnet techniques and discusses state-of-the-art countermeasures to combat the botnet threat in detail. It includes new detection methods as well as different approaches to actively compromise running botnets.

Book Description:
Dale s book challenged my thinking that professional missionaries are the best people to bring the Gospel to others around the world. I was comfortable sending money and letting others be messengers of the Truth. The fact is, all believers should be excited to tell others about the wonderful love of Jesus. The time and place that we do this is not important. One of the best places to communicate the love of Jesus to others is in our places of work. Dale lays out a terrific plan to get people from every profession involved in the great command to make disciples of all nations.

Book Description:
If we cannot carry our practice into sleep, Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche writes, if we lose ourselves every night, what chance do we have to be aware when death comes? Look to your experience in dreams to know how you will fare in death. Look to your experience of sleep to discover whether or not you are truly awake. This book gives detailed instruction for dream yoga, including foundational practices done during the day. In the Tibetan tradition, the ability to dream lucidly is not an end in itself, rather it provides an additional context in which one can engage in advanced and effective practices to achieve liberation. Dream yoga is followed by sleep yoga, also known as the yoga of clear light. It is a more advanced practice, similar to the most secret Tibetan practices. The goal is to remain awake during deep sleep when the gross conceptual mind and the operation of the senses cease. Most Westerners do not even consider this depth of awareness a possibility, yet it is well known in Tibetan Buddhist and Bon spiritual traditions. The result of these practices is greater happiness and freedom in both our waking and dreaming states. The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep imparts powerful methods for progressing along the path to liberation.

Format: AZW3/EPUB/PDF
Book Description:
From Major League Baseballs inception in the 1880s through World War II, team owners enjoyed monopolistic control of the industry. Despite the players desire to form a viable union, every attempt to do so failed. The labor consciousness of baseball players lagged behind that of workers in other industries, and the public was largely in the dark about labor practices in baseball. In the mid-1960s, star players Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale staged a joint holdout for multiyear contracts and much higher salaries. Their holdout quickly drew support from the public for the first time, owners realized they could ill afford to alienate fans, their primary source of revenue. Baseballs Power Shift chronicles the growth and development of the union movement in Major League Baseball and the key role of the press and public opinion in the players successes and failures in labor-management relations. Swanson focuses on the most turbulent years, 1966 to 1981, which saw the birth of the Major League Baseball Players Association as well as three strikes, two lockouts, Curt Floods challenge to the reserve clause in the Supreme Court, and the emergence of full free agency. To defeat the owners, the players union needed support from the press, and perhaps more importantly, the public. With the public on their side, the players ushered in a new era in professional sports when salaries skyrocketed and fans began to care as much about the business dealings of their favorite team as they do about wins and losses. Swanson shows how fans and the media became key players in baseball s labor wars and paved the way for the explosive growth in the American sports economy.

The best trips start here. Visit us online at Frommers.com Summary: Frommer s Chicago Day by Day Rating: 5 With this book you really can see the sites as you go to Chicago. This book has beautiful Illustrations and maps to help you guide your way through Chicago. Summary: Great form factor; information not well organized Rating: 3 I love the form factor of this book, but I think the day-to-day format is flawed. I chose to set my own schedule and once that happened, it was difficult to use the book. The organization was suited towards guided tours and less towards a travel reference. I used others skinny books with much better maps as well. Summary: Quick and Informative! Rating: 5 I came to Chicago for a wedding and stayed a couple of extra days. My friends could not believe how much I got to see, and this book was a tremendous help. There are detailed sections on several of Chicago s neighborhoods, which is great if you are the type of tourist who (like me) enjoys just walking around and getting a feel for the city. But there was also great information about landmarks, parks, entertainment, etc. My only suggestion would be that if there is someplace you are DYING to go, call ahead as there were a couple of addresses that were wrong, especially in the Andersonville section. Usually off by a couple of blocks, so it could be that things just moved since the book came out. Also, the restaurant suggestions looked pretty good but I don t think any book could beat www.yelp.com when looking for places to eat/drink. Summary: Use this book to plan your trip! Rating: 5 I used this book to plan a long weekend in Chicago (November 2006) and couldn t be happier with the results. The only slightly negative comment I have about the book is that not all prices were completely accurate. It seems admission to some museums, etc. have increased by a few dollars, but I wasn t too bent out of shape about that. I really liked how the book lists the top spots to hit depending on how many days you plan to spend in the city. I highly recommend the following (as did the book): Architechture Foundation s River Cruise, Second City Comedy Club, Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, and Corner Bakery (for breakfast or a quick lunch). This book also comes with maps that are extremely useful. There is a train (subway) map and a general city map that are right on the inside cover, so it is very easy to get to. A larger, more detailed map is also included. Plus, this book is the perfect size to fit in my purse so we could carry it with us all day long. I could go on and on, but my trip to Chicago was great and I believe this book had a lot to do with that. Summary: I need more days in Chicago Rating: 5 This book strutured my visit to Chicago. It s a big city. Where do you go first? How do I get on the right spot, etc. This guide helps you to find all the interesting places.Small size, excellent maps, good pictures and accurate information, that s what a tourist needs during his exploration either on foot or other transportation. I didn t do all the 17 smart ways to see the city yet. I need some more days. I plan to come again and will take this guide with me.

In examining this issue, the chapters provide assessments of the social, economic, and political impact on fuel pricing, food costs, and the environmental challenge with corn biomass the engine of change. It then examines whether corn be genetically improved so that its biomass is significantly increased, its cellulose-lignin complex made more amenable to harvesting and to processing, and grown in regions not normally associated with its cultivation of food.

Book Description:
This book examines the bottom-up applicability of swarm intelligence to solving multiple problems, such as curve fitting, image segmentation, and swarm robotics. It compares the capabilities of some of the better-known bio-inspired optimization approaches, especially Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization (DPSO) and the recently proposed Fractional Order Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization (FODPSO), and comprehensively discusses their advantages and disadvantages. Further, it demonstrates the superiority and key advantages of using the FODPSO algorithm, such as its ability to provide an improved convergence towards a solution, while avoiding sub-optimality. This book offers a valuable resource for researchers in the fields of robotics, sports science, pattern recognition and machine learning, as well as for students of electrical engineering and computer science.
