Book Description:
I ve just completed reading Claude Vivier: A Composer s Life, by Bob Gilmore. It is a worthwhile, well informed and well-researched account of both the life and the musical ideas and projects of Claude Vivier, considered by many to be Canada s greatest composer. It relies in large measure on the texts written by and about Vivier in his life time and interviews with those who knew him in Europe and in Canada. Vivier spent many of his adult years in Europe: in Utrecht, Cologne and Paris. But at the end of his life he avows a homesickness for Montreal and for the warmth of his circle of friends, many of them composers, performers and other artists, who have since become part of the human and institutional capital which has bred the unique musical and artistic culture which is Montreal. Sadly, many of the battles which Claude was fighting then, are in need of new champions as composers seek commissioning funds, opportunities for broadcast on CBC and Radio-Canada, listeners and public discussion of their works with respect and attention. A fine story of a life and an artistic undertaking and also a landscape of an emerging cultural scene in Montreal.
