Thomas Hobbes wrote extensively about law and was strongly influenced by developments and debates among lawyers of his day. And Hobbes is considered by many commentators to be one of the first legal positivists. Yet there is no book in English that focuses on Hobbes s legal philosophy. Indeed, Hobbes s own book length treatment of law, A Dialogue Between a Philosopher and a Student of the Common Laws of England, has also not received much commentary over the centuries. Larry May seeks to fill the gap in the literature by addressing Hobbes s legal philosophy directly, and comparing Leviathan to the Dialogue, as he offers a new interpretation of Hobbes s views about the connections among law, politics, and morality. May argues that Hobbes is much more amenable to moral, and even legal, limits on the law indeed closer to Lon Fuller than to today s legal positivists than he is often portrayed. He shows that Hobbes s views can provide a solid grounding for the rules of war and international relations generally, contrary to the near universal belief that Hobbes is the bete noir of international law. To support these views, May holds that Hobbes places greater weight on equity than on justice, and that understanding the role of equity is the key to his legal philosophy. Equity also is the moral concept that provides restrictions on what a sovereign can legitimately do, and if violated is the kind of limitation on sovereignty that could open the door for possible international institutions.

Civil aviation is concerned with the safe and expeditious movement of people and freight from one point on the globe s surface to some other desired point. The responsibility for this safe passage is that of the pilots of the aircraft involved. In this responsibility they are assisted by ground-based systems and personnel. Safety is maintained by assuring adequate separation of aircraft, and to this end appropriate procedures and recommended practices have been devised by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Many countries provide an air traffic control () service in at least part of their airspace. Pilots are required to file flight plans before their departure so that their intentions are understood and their flight can be integrated with other air traffic. The degree of separation required for aircraft is influenced by the quality and accuracy of the position data available. In sparsely populated areas external aids to the pilot can be few and far between and separations of as much as 30 min of travel can be set for aircraft on the same course. These procedural separations are very generous since they are dependent on the aircraft s own navigation accuracy and allowance must be made for possible errors in navigation. However, they are inappropriate in areas of dense traffic, and the use of ground radar is required in order to handle demands on airspace without prejudicing safety.

Although the majority of Chinas population is of the Han nationality (which accounts for more than 90% of Chinas population), the non-Han ethnic groups have a population of more than 100 million. Until now, China has officially identified, except for other unknown ethnic groups and foreigners with Chinese citizenship, 56 ethnic groups. In addition, ethnic groups vary widely in size. With a population of more than 15 million, the Zhuang have the largest ethnic minority, and the Lhoba, with only two thousand or more, the smallest. Chinas ethnic diversity has resulted in a special socioeconomic landscape of China itself. This book develops a complete socioeconomic picture and a detailed and comparable set of data for each of Chinas ethnic groups. There have not been any precise data on Chinas socioeconomic statistics from multi-ethnic dimension. The only official data released can be found in China Ethnic Statistical Yearbook (released by the State Commission of Ethnic Affairs (SCEA) of the Peoples Republic of China since 1994). However, as this Yearbook has only reported the socioeconomic statistics for the minority-based autonomous areas, a complete set of Chinas multi-ethnic data cannot be derived from it. This book provides a broad collection of data on Chinas 56 ethnic groups and profiles the demography, cultural, economy, and business climates for each of Chinas diverse ethnic groups.

Vivier spent many of his adult years in Europe: in Utrecht, Cologne and Paris. But at the end of his life he avows a homesickness for Montreal and for the warmth of his circle of friends, many of them composers, performers and other artists, who have since become part of the human and institutional capital which has bred the unique musical and artistic culture which is Montreal. Sadly, many of the battles which Claude was fighting then, are in need of new champions as composers seek commissioning funds, opportunities for broadcast on CBC and Radio-Canada, listeners and public discussion of their works with respect and attention. A fine story of a life and an artistic undertaking and also a landscape of an emerging cultural scene in Montreal.

Vibro-impact dynamics has occupied a wide spectrum of studies by dynamicists, physicists, and mathematicians. One of the most beneficial outcomes of vibro-impact dynamics is the development of impact dampers, which have witnessed significant activities over the last four decades and have been used in several applications.
